Video: 2021 Mazda 3 Turbo unveiled in all its glory.

Mazda has released a video of the highly anticipated Mazda 3 Turbo in the US overnight, revealing further details about its increased power and all-wheel-drive grip.

Headlining the company's small car range in North America, the model will come in two variants: the standard Mazda 3 Turbo, and the Mazda 3 Turbo Premium Plus.

Buyers will have a choice of sedan or hatch, but no manual transmission is on the horizon at this stage.

The 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder will produce 170kW on standard unleaded, with up to 186kW available on premium fuel. Torque is 420Nm or 434Nm respectively.

Though not blistering performance numbers by today's standards, the Mazda 3 Turbo is competing in the same market as the Volkswagen Golf GTi, which itself offers 180kW/370Nm.

Mazda has not provided details on the automatic transmission, but it's understood a six-speed auto will send power to all four wheels.

An optional Aero Kit provides sleek but subtle front and rear spoilers, with side skirts and rear diffuser also available to compliment the dual exhaust pipes. Black 18-inch BBS forged alloy wheels complete the look.

While a right-hand-drive version has not been announced, if the hot hatch did make its way to Australia, pricing from the US indicates the Mazda 3 Turbo would also compete with VW's Golf GTI at around $46,000 plus on-road costs.

Mazda Australia has previously said it would be "very interested" in the model if it became available to right-hand-drive markets.
