Toyota recalls Prius and Corolla Hybrid models due to software fault
The hybrid systems on the Corolla and Prius may cause a complete loss of power, rather than going into a fail-safe mode.
Toyota Australia has issued a recall of 847 examples of its Prius with Model Years from 2014 to 2015 (MY14-MY15), and 5118 examples of the Corolla Hybrid with Model Years from 2015 to 2018 (MY15-MY18).
The recall notice, lodged with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), says the hybrid system in the two models may shut down entirely when it detects a fault or component failure, rather than entering into a 'fail-safe' that provides the driver with reduced power.
Toyota says in rare situations the software fault may cause a complete loss of power, as if a vehicle has been put into neutral. If this were to occur, steering and braking systems remain fully operational.
Affected cars were sold between 14 March 2014 and 11 February 2019. Toyota Australia is contacting owners to organise inspection and repair of the defect.
CarAdvice requested confirmation of any known incidents in Australia, but a Toyota spokesperson declined to comment.
