2021 MG 5 EV wagon: right-hand-drive ready, but ruled out for Australia

The fully-electric wagon from MG is set to arrive in the UK in late 2020, but there are no plans to introduce the model in Australia.

A right-hand-drive version of the 2021 MG 5 EV wagon has been unveiled overseas, with the model expected in UK showrooms in October 2020.

The MG 5 EV is based on the Roewe Ei5 (shown in these photos) – an electric wagon from Chinese car maker SAIC – and features a 52.5kWh battery powering an 85kW electric motor.

MG claims the 5 EV wagon offers a maximum driving range of 344 kilometres on a single charge, based on the real-world driving cycle 'WLTP' test.

With so few right-hand-drive markets, the development paves the way for a potential Australian release as the revamped brand tries to establish a foothold with buyers locally.

While pricing has not been confirmed in the UK, it's expected the MG 5 EV will compete with the Hyundai Ioniq (available in Australia for $48,970 plus on-road costs) and the Nissan Leaf ($49,999 plus on-road costs).

But the MG's main advantage is its size, offering 578 litre of boot space – more than a Subaru Outback wagon or Audi Q5 medium SUV.

The MG 5 EV wagon is the second fully-electric model from the car maker, with the MG ZS EV soon to be released locally.

A spokesperson for MG Australia told CarAdvice: "We have no plans to bring this model to market locally. However, we do look forward to the launch of our first electric vehicle, the MG ZS EV SUV, in Australia in Q4 this year."
