General Motors reveals Wuling Hong Guang X concept in China

Rugged seven-seat concept to launch in 2021 as boxy Haval H5 rival

Chinese brand Wuling – a joint venture between American giant General Motors, Chinese conglomerate SAIC and local brand Wuling Motors – has unveiled the Hong Guang X concept at the Chengdu motor show.

The bold concept previews an upcoming production model set to launch sometime in 2021, which will serve as one of three all-new models slated to head the Chinese brand’s expansion into export markets in Europe and North America.

The highlight of the Hong Guang X concept is undoubtedly its styling. Boxy and prism-like, it adopts Wuling’s new ‘wing dynamic aesthetics’ design language, with upright sides and muscular, rugged styling features.

Up front there’s a tall grille with slim headlights and X-shaped daytime-running lights – evoking images of a Hyundai Santa Fe or Mitsubishi Pajero Sport – while at the rear there's a full-width light bar, a large rear spoiler and more X-shaped motifs in the tail-light signature.

Other styling features of note include chunky front, side and rear skid plates, black wheels and fender flares, rear-hinged ‘suicide’ doors and a bold, body-coloured C-pillar that wraps the full length around the top of the vehicle.

Wuling claims the Hong Guang X concept is a close representation of the final production model set to launch in China next year, where it will rival other rugged-looking mid-size SUVs the likes of the recently-revealed Haval H5 (now renamed "Big Dog" in its home market).

No images have been released of the concept’s interior, however expect a similarly rugged cabin design infused with plenty of technology to ensure it keeps up with its modern SUV segment peers. Seven seats are reportedly also on offer.

While details of what lies under the bonnet of the concept remain unknown, Car News China reports the production Hong Guang X will offer a choice between two turbocharged petrol engines: a 1.8-litre unit producing 132kW (180 horsepower), or a 2.0-litre mill developing 162kW (220hp).
