Details for the new 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA city SUV has been announced for Australia, completing the brand's revised compact model line-up – bringing with it a price rises of between $3500 and $15,000.

The entry-level two-wheel-drive GLA200 is $55,100 plus on-road costs – nearly $10,000 more than the outgoing GLA180.

At the other end of the range is the AMG GLA45 S, now $107,035 plus on-road costs, compared with $92,100 plus on-road costs for the previous version, amounting to an increase of almost $15,000.

The middle-of-the-range GLA250 increases in price from $63,000 to $66,500 plus on-road costs, a $3500 hike.

As with the recent model announcement of the large GLE Coupe, Mercedes has dropped the diesel option for Australia, however the GLA now gains a second AMG variant – the GLA35, priced from $82,935 plus on-road costs.

Advanced safety equipment on the new Mercedes-Benz GLA includes Active Brake Assist – which provides semi-autonomous braking capability at lower speeds – as well as blind spot warning, lane-keeping assistance, and a cross-wind aid. All models come with nine airbags as standard.

Despite the price rise across the range, optional safety equipment includes a Driving Assistance Package, with radar cruise control, lane change assistance, semi-autonomous traffic jam assist, and route-based speed adaptation which can detect bends and obstacles head, lowering the cruise control speed accordingly.

The all-new model is 122mm taller than its predecessor, giving occupants greater headroom and a more commanding driving position. Despite being 14mm shorter than the previous car, the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLA provides greater legroom for second-row passengers.

Twin 10.25-inch screens look after the digital instrument display and infotainment duties previously seen on recent Mercedes-Benz models, and featuring the much-touted MBUX infotainment system with digital radio, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto capability.

The range kicks off with the front-wheel-drive 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA200, with a 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder producing 120kW/250Nm and coupled with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. From a standstill, Mercedes says the GLA200 will reach 100km/h in 8.7 seconds.

The GLA200 comes equipped with Comfort Seats trimmed in the company's synthetic leather, named Artico. Keyless entry and start, automatic climate control, and rear parking camera with semi-autonomous parallel parking assist come as standard.

The entry-level GLA200 also comes with low-beam LED headlights, Easy-Pack powered tailgate, and 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels.

Those wanting extra grip can go for the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA250 4Matic, which adds all-wheel-drive and a 2.0-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder putting out 165kW/350Nm via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and completing the 0-100km/h sprint in a claimed 6.7 seconds.

With the addition of the all-wheel-drive 4Matic system, Mercedes-Benz has also added the Off-Road Engineering Package as standard.

The off-road pack provides drivers with hill descent control, regulating speed in low-traction environments such as sand or mud. A special feature now allows the LED headlamps to provide a wider spread of light when maneuvering in low-speed situations.

Mercedes-Benz says the new GLA also offers protective cladding and short front and rear body overhangs, allowing for greater approach and departure angles in off-road situations.

The GLA250 also enjoys the addition of a panoramic sunroof, heated front seats with memory, and remote start capability via the company's smartphone app. Twin-spoke 19-inch wheels come as standard.

Both the GLA200 and GLA250 can be optioned with the 'Edition 1' package – a limited option which provides electric heated seats in black with red inserts and contrast stitching, 'Carbon Structure' interior trim, AMG floor mats, and panoramic sunroof.

Outside the Edition 1 package gets AMG body enhancements, LED high- and low-beam headlights, black and chrome highlights with window tint, special badging, and 20-inch AMG alloy wheels.

All vehicles optioned with the Edition 1 package also get the lowered comfort suspension and Parking Package with 360-degree cameras.

First of the two performance models is the all-wheel-drive 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLA35 4Matic, giving owners 225kW/400Nm from the turbo 2.0-litre, with an AMG-tuned version of the eight-speed dual-clutch automatic helping to complete the 0-100km/h dash in a claimed 5.2 seconds.

Comfort seats in Lugano leather along with an AMG Nappa leather steering wheel with AMG Drive Unit functionality are standard equipment on the GLA35, as are sports suspension and steering, high-performance brakes, an AMG exhaust, and the AMG Night Package with exterior enhancements and 20-inch alloys.

The range-topping 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLA45 S 4Matic offers 310kW/500Nm from the 2.0-litre turbo engine, also mated to the eight-speed transmission with all-wheel-drive. Mercedes claims the GLA45 S can hit 100km/h from standstill in 4.3 seconds.

With the extra performance comes launch control, AMG's enhanced all-wheel-drive system with Torque Control, six-piston front brake calipers coupled with large perforated discs, AMG Track Pack, and AMG Driver's Package – increasing top-speed to 265km/h.

A Dinamica synthetic suede AMG Performance steering wheel, contrast stitching on the steering wheel and Comfort seats, and a Burmester sound system are fitted as standard.

Owners will also gain Mercedes' Driving Assistance Package Plus, active radar cruise control with front cross-traffic assist, Lane Change Assist, route-based speed adaptation, Parking Package with 360-degree cameras, LED low- and high-beam headlights, and a more aggressive AMG body-kit.
