2021 BMW X7 Dark Shadow Edition revealed – UPDATE: Australian pricing confirmed, arrives March 2021

You wouldn't think they could do it, but BMW has found a way to give its behemoth X7 a hint of stealth.

UPDATE, December 7, 2020: BMW Australia has at last confirmed the X7 Dark Shadow Edition for our shores.

Just 10 examples will offered locally, available in a choice of two powertrains: the 195kW/620Nm 3.0-litre turbo-diesel inline-six-powered xDrive30d, or the 390kW/750Nm 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V8-powered M50i.

Five of each engine choice will be offered, priced from $188,900 drive-away in xDrive30d M Sport guise, and $215,900 drive-away in M50i form.

Local reservations for the X7 Dark Shadow Edition can be exclusively placed online via the brand's BMW Shop, with orders taken on a first-come first-serve basis starting at 1pm AEDT on Monday, December 7.

Potential buyers can place a $5000 deposit on a vehicle via the online portal, with their preferred dealer to finalise the transaction closer to the first deliveries in March 2021.

Dark Shadow Edition-specific highlights include Frozen Arctic Grey paintwork, 22-inch black alloy wheels, black exterior trim, blue brake calipers, Merino quilted Night Blue/Black leather trim, and more – see our original story below for full details on what the special edition adds.

July 24, 2020: Another day, another 'black pack'. BMW's done it often enough, having revealed 1 Series Shadow Edition, M2 Black Shadow Edition and M5 Nighthawk editions in years past.

It's hard to argue with the look, though – particularly in the case of this latest addition: the BMW X7 Dark Shadow Edition.

Never has so massive an ostensible family mover looked so stealth, with all chrome trim finished now in gloss and matte black.

And, unlike so many blacked-out editions, this one also has its main body palette set to… well, not black, but a convincing Frozen Arctic Grey that produces a satin-like finish in the same way past BMW 'frozen' colourways have done.

Frozen Arctic Grey is a 'BMW Individual' option colour, and BMW says it will be adding it to not only the X7's menu, but also for the new X6 and X5 SUVs.

Inside, there's an M leather steering wheel and BMW Individual Merino full leather upholstery in a two-tone Night Blue / Black trim with contrasting seams.

The BMW Individual roof liner is in Night Blue Alcantara, and the upper parts of the instrument panel and armrests of the doors are in Night Blue Nappa leather. Piano black finishes also feature throughout.

The X7 Dark Shadow edition (technically known as the X7 Edition Dark Shadow, presumably named by Yoda) will be built at BMW's Spartanburg plant in the US.

Only 500 examples will be built, and we're waiting on BMW Australia to confirm local availability.

Sales figures for the BMW X7 in Australia show it has moved 445 examples so far in 2020 (figures valid to end of June, July numbers still to come).

By comparison, the X7's biggest rival – literally and figuratively – the Mercedes-Benz GLS has sold 503 examples over the same period.

A little stealth action could be just what the doktor ordered.
