2021 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross in Australia by late 2020, new Outlander to follow

Mitsubishi announces launch timing for important SUVs as 'proof of our commitment to deliver high quality, leading-edge SUVs to Australian owners and their families.'

It has been a relatively quiet year for Mitsubishi Australia, but the company has today confirmed that changes to two of its most important model lines are on the horizon.

The 2021 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, an anticipated facelift first spied in January, will make its Australian debut in the fourth quarter of 2020.

The new-generation 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander will follow next year. Mitsubishi Australia did not put a more specific timeline on that launch, although a North American press release describes a second-quarter debut.

Spy photos published at CarAdvice in January reveal that we can expect key front and rear styling changes for the Eclipse Cross, which first landed here in late 2017.

Mitsubishi has offered no details on the upgrade, and it remains unclear if any changes are planned for its mechanical package or the sole 110kW/250Nm 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol engine offered in Australia.

One of the more popular small SUVs in Australia, Mitsubishi sold 6998 Eclipse Crosses in 2019 – although this was down from 7521 for its first full year in Australia, 2018.

The new 2021 Outlander will be a big affair in its own right, debuting a boxier and bolder look for its fourth generation.

Spy photos published in January confirm we can expect the new Outlander to take its styling cues from the 2019 Engelberg concept.

The new model is expected to ride on the same platform that underpins the new X-Trail SUV offered by its alliance partner Nissan.

The company's local arm promises the 2021 Outlander will be "the quietest and best-equipped Mitsubishi ever sold in Australia".

"Loaded with technology and significant interior refinements, this game-changing vehicle will surprise many," it boasted in a short announcement today.

The new Outlander can't come too soon for Mitsubishi, with the current model debuting in 2012 before gaining a significant facelift in 2015 and another minor makeover in 2018.

The Outlander's age hasn't hurt its appeal, however, with 17,514 units moved in 2019 – up from the 15,573 sales recorded in 2018.
