2021 BMW M5 Competition price and specs: new looks, upgraded drive

Australian pricing for the 2021 BMW M5 Competition has been announced, and the updated performance sedan gains a long list of revisions.

In its refreshed MY21 form, the M5 Competition starts at $244,900 plus on-road costs, marking a $10,000 increase over the outgoing model.

For that money, your M5 will again be powered by 460kW/750Nm 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 mated to an eight-speed torque-converter automatic. BMW's M xDrive system provides rear-biased all-wheel drive, but can be switched to rear-wheel drive through the available modes.

Drive

As before, the 2021 BMW M5 Competition claims a 0-100km/h time of 3.3 seconds, and has a top speed of 305km/h for Australian-delivered vehicles thanks to the M Driver's Package, which comes as standard.

To ensure owners are best equipped to handle the M5 Competition's performance, BMW provides complimentary entry into its entry-level advanced driver training course. The M Driver's Package also includes admission to the BMW Driving Experience Advance 2 course, redeemable in Australia, Germany, and the USA.

The M5 Competition has been the only variant of the super sedan available locally since 2018. As the M5 Competition is the top-level of the model, buyers also gain Track capability, disabling all comfort, safety, and driving aids.

As reported in June, the updated M5 launches with a host of styling revisions, along with new shock absorbers and retuned suspension, gaining the same damper package featured in the M8 Competition Gran Coupé. The M5 Competition now sits slightly lower and gets stiffer engine mounts, reducing flex and improving driver feedback.

Inside, a new 12.3-inch screen with BMW's OS 7.0 system is offered with Live Cockpit display.

Black styling details also come standard with the M5 Competition, with the vehicle fitted with high-gloss black kidney grille, mirrors, rear lip spoiler, and badges. Exhaust tips are also black chrome.

M Compound brakes come standard with six-piston front calipers, single-piston rear calipers, and the option of ceramic brakes (with gold callipers) saving 23 kilograms.

A choice between two sets of 20-inch wheels can be specified by buyers at no extra cost.

Four 'frozen' matte exterior colours can be optioned. These are Bluestone metallic (light silver-blue), Cashmere Silver metallic, Dark Silver metallic, and Marina Bay Blue metallic. Traditional and BMW Individual paint colours are also available.

Leather seat colour choices are no additional cost, including Smoke White and Tartufo – the latter being a rich cinnamon colour. Trim is also a no-cost option, with black piano and a number of aluminium alternatives available.

An Indulgence Package can be optioned, adding massage to the front seats, television functionality, and BMW's Rear Seat Entertainment, providing high definition displays for passengers in the back.

Deliveries of the 2021 BMW M5 Competition begin locally from October 2020.
