McLaren-Mercedes Formula One engine goes to auction

Need an engine for the project car sitting idle in your garage? Now is your chance to buy a genuine Formula One engine.

Offered by RM Sotheby's – the famous automobile auction house – a McLaren-Mercedes V10 engine from the 2004 season is currently live with a starting bid of €20,000 (AU$32,800).

The McLaren team used the Mercedes-Benz V10 engine in their 2004 F1 car, known as the MP4-19, and was driven by Kimi Räikkönen and David Coulthard. Adrian Newey was the F1 car's designer, two years before his move to Red Bull Racing.

Despite not having key internal components such as pistons and conrods, RM Sotherby's estimates the engine at between €40,000 to €60,000 (AU$65k-100k).

In its day, the 3.0-litre V10 would have produced close to 700kW at more than 18,000rpm.

The McLaren-Mercedes engine is part of the RM Sotheby's auction 'Open Roads, the European Summer Auction'. The winner of the auction will need to collect the engine from Germany.
