Next-generation Subaru engine range detailed – report
The Japanese car manufacturer is said to be developing three new engines to meet strict emissions and fuel economy targets.
Details have emerged of Subaru's next generation of engines, according to a report from Japanese website CarSensor.
Three new turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engines are expected to be introduced in Subaru's new range from 2021.
The first is a 1.5-litre direct-injection engine, understood to replace the 2.0-litre non-turbo engine currently fitted to the Impreza sedan and hatch and soft-roader XV hatch. While unconfirmed at this stage, power output is thought to be around 110kW.
A 1.8-litre direct-injection turbocharged boxer engine is also being developed with approximately 198kW, alongside a 2.4-litre direct-injection turbo expected in two performance levels. The 'low-output' version reportedly produces 206kW.
At this stage it's unconfirmed which of the two engines will be offered in the Liberty sedan, Outback wagon, Forester SUV, Levorg wagon, or WRX sedan.
In April 2020, reports emerged of a 2.4-litre engine being developed by Toyota and Subaru for the upcoming BRZ coupe and 86 coupe.
However, for the range-topping WRX STi sedan, a 'high-output' version of the 2.4-litre is expected. Reports are the engine could make anywhere from 244kW to as much as 298kW, as reported by CarAdvice in February 2020.
The reason for the different power outputs being leaked by varying sources? It could be Subaru's new hybrid system, with industry murmurs suggesting Subaru's next-generation model range will be entirely hybridised.
As reported by in January 2020, Subaru is working towards an entirely electric model range by the mid-2030s. If true, these three internal-combustion boxer engines will likely be the last from the Japanese automaker.
