Toyota HiLux almost sold out in lead-up to new model

The Toyota HiLux ute is running out of stock faster than expected – and customers could be left waiting for weeks as production of the updated model ramps up.

The Toyota HiLux posted its strongest sales months of all time in June – as buyers who stayed away from showrooms in April and May returned in the lead-up to the end of the financial year.

The unexpected surge in demand – combined with a six-week pause in HiLux production during the coronavirus crisis – has left many Toyota showrooms with little to no stock of Australia’s best selling car.

The updated 2021 Toyota HiLux (pictured below) is due in showrooms in August.

However, many customers who placed an order in June may not take delivery for another month or more.

Dealers contacted by CarAdvice said there were limited supplies of Toyota HiLux spread across the country, but most were holding onto their remaining stock rather than swapping them with other showrooms who have fallen short or sold out.

It is common practice for showrooms to swap cars among themselves to meet shifts in demand, but each request to release a car is at that dealer’s discretion.

Toyota has removed HiLux models from the "current offers" page on its website, and dealers have told CarAdvice they are doing everything they can to source vehicles as soon as possible. However, many dealers – and customers – are now obliged to wait for the updated, more powerful HiLux to arrive.

Automatic versions of the 2021 Toyota HiLux four-wheel-drive with the 2.8-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder will gain a power boost to 150kW/500Nm, and towing capacity has increased from 3200kg to 3500kg. (The 2.8 manual still has an output of 130kW/420Nm and was already rated to tow 3500kg).

Inside, the 2021 Toyota HiLux will gain a digital speed display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and volume and tuning dials on the infotainment screen.

The updated model will also get revised suspension, much of which was developed in Australia.

The Toyota HiLux ute posted an all-time monthly sales record – with 6537 deliveries last month, its best result since June 2018. The Ford Ranger outsold the Toyota HiLux in June when only four-wheel-drive versions are compared.

The 2021 Toyota HiLux range is due in showrooms in the second half of August 2020.
