2021 MG ZST announced for Australia: More power, safety, tech

MG has revealed the new ZST in two variants, joining the company's line-up of affordable small SUVs.

UPDATE, September 1 2020: Australian pricing for the 2021 MG ZST has now been announced. Details here.

The 2021 MG ZST has been announced for Australia, adding a more powerful engine, advanced safety tech, and more features to its small SUV offering. This news follows its UK launch earlier this month.

Full details are still to come, but MG confirms the ZST will be offered in two variants, both powered by a 115kW 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine. That unit represents 42 per cent bump in power over the current ZS models (available with a choice of an 82kW turbo 1.0-litre three-cylinder, and an 84kW non-turbo 1.5-litre four-cylinder).

The ZST will join the existing ZS, along with the MG3 hatch, and HS medium SUV models. In comparison to the ZS currently on offer here, the ZST brings a more premium interior, added tech, and a panoramic sunroof.

Buyers will also benefit from MG Pilot, a safety package of driver aids comprising speed assist, adaptive cruise control with traffic jam intelligence, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, lane-change assist, and 360-degree cameras.

Interior appointments are also an improvement over the current ZS, with a 10.1-inch infotainment touch screen system (compared with the ZS's 8-inch unit), a digital driver dashboard, and what MG claims is a higher level of interior fit and finish.

An updated, sharper exterior design with daytime running lights and LED headlights completes the look.

As with all MG models, the ZST also comes with a seven-year, unlimited kilometre warranty and roadside assist.

More details on the MG ZST are expected in August, with models available to buy in showrooms from the third quarter of 2020.

EDITOR'S NOTE, September 1 2020: An earlier press release for the MG ZST showed its power figure at 120kW. It is in fact 115kW. This story has been updated to reflect this correction.
