Cars for sale: five deals on seven-seat SUVs

You can save thousands on a seven-seat family SUV if you shop around.

New-car bargains are becoming harder to find after bigger-than-expected sales in June left showrooms empty, and factory shutdowns during the coronavirus crisis delayed the arrival of fresh stock.

With that in mind, there are still savings to be found if you’re patient and prepared to shop around.

A word of warning, be sure to check with more than one dealer so you can get a clearer picture of whether the car you want is out of stock at that particular showroom – or if there is a national shortage.

It is common for dealers to swap cars among themselves to help customers source the vehicle they want, but, when there is limited stock, some outlets are less inclined to let go of in-demand cars.

Nevertheless, we have found drive-away deals on five full-size family seven-seaters. Next week we’ll pick another vehicle category to focus on, as we build up a rolling roster of sharp deals.

The prices and finance packages listed below were available as this article was published, but deals change from month to month.

Toyota Kluger

The Toyota Kluger is the top-seller in this category and big discounts have emerged as a new model approaches in the first half of next year.

The Toyota Kluger is among the most metal for the money in the seven-seat SUV category, with prices now starting from $41,990 drive-away for the base model GX in V6 petrol front-wheel-drive format.

All-wheel drive increases the price of this model grade to $45,990 drive-away. Both prices are about $3000 off the full RRP.

Mazda CX-9

The Mazda CX-9 is the second-biggest seller in this class and, as with the Toyota Kluger, it is a petrol-only proposition. However, the Mazda is powered by a turbo four-cylinder petrol engine rather than a V6. All variants are available in front-drive or all-wheel drive.

Deals are rare on the Mazda CX-9 however the base model Sport front-drive is being advertised for $45,990 drive-away while the GT front-drive costs $61,990 drive-away. Both prices are about $3000 off the full RRP.

Hyundai Santa Fe

The Hyundai Santa Fe is the third-biggest seller in this category so far this year, but it hasn’t sold as well as expected despite favourable reviews.

Unlike the Toyota and Mazda, the Hyundai Santa Fe is available in petrol V6 front-drive or diesel four-cylinder all-wheel-drive format.

The base model Hyundai Santa Fe Active V6 front-drive petrol starts from $44,990 drive-away. The diesel variant is $48,990 drive-away. Both prices amount to savings of about $2000 off the full RRP.

As this article was published, these prices can be combined with a low interest rate offer (equivalent to approximately 1.65 to 2.9 per cent depending on how it’s calculated). However, if you take up Hyundai’s finance deal you need a 10 per cent deposit and the loan must be paid out within three years, which means individual payments could be higher than a longer-term loan.

Kia Sorento

Deals on the Kia Sorento are thin on the ground as most dealers have cleared out remaining stock of the runout model ahead of the new generation due in local showrooms next month.

It too is available as a V6 petrol front-drive or diesel four-cylinder all-wheel-drive, but stock is scarce.

Only one drive-away deal is currently on offer, on the Kia Sorento Black Edition, however remaining stock of this model is also disappearing fast. The V6 petrol auto front-wheel-drive is listed at $49,190 drive-away – about $2000 off the full RRP.

It’s also available with a 2 per cent finance offer that requires zero deposit, but the loan must be repaid within three years, meaning the individual repayments could be higher than a longer-term loan.

The Kia Sorento has a seven-year warranty versus five years coverage on the Toyota Kluger, Mazda CX-9 and Hyundai Santa Fe. The Nissan Pathfinder also normally only has a five-year warranty, except this month’s offer has given it a boost…

Nissan Pathfinder

The Nissan Pathfinder is available with V6 petrol or V6 hybrid petrol power. As is often the case with Nissan, there are no sharp drive-away prices in bold type on its website, however it has instead put out a seven-year warranty and low interest rate finance offer.

All models in the Nissan Pathfinder range are available with seven-year warranty and seven-year roadside assistance and can be bought via Nissan finance at a 3.9 per cent comparison rate. No deposit is required and buyers have four years to pay out the loan.
