Toyota Corolla Cross SUV revealed, Australian launch due 2022

Corolla name expands to include a new SUV model for the first time, and it's coming to Australia.

A new Toyota Corolla Cross SUV has been unveiled today, coming hot on the 'heels' of the recently revealed Yaris Cross.

Leveraging the famous Corolla name, the new small SUV will go on sale in Thailand first, before expanding into global markets – including Australia, although not until late 2022 as a 'model year 2023' offering.

The 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross will slot in between the Yaris Cross and the now iconic RAV4 as a more practical companion to the style-focused C-HR.

Toyota's latest offering rides on the same 'GA-C' platform that underpins its C-HR sibling, along with the Corolla hatch and sedan, the Prius hybrid and Lexus's small UX SUV.

No details beyond these images have been announced, although Toyota of course promises the same chassis characteristics that have seen its new-generation offerings review well with the CarAdvice team.

Power should come from the same 125kW/200Nm 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine that features in the Corolla range, along with the 90kW 1.8-litre petrol-electric hybrid system that Corolla buyers can also option.

This will be the first SUV in the Toyota range to carry the Corolla name, although fans might consider the AE95 Corolla 4WD a close relative to the modern SUV concept.

"Corolla Cross is not only stylish and versatile, it delivers the superior practicality demanded by customers in this segment including the high driving position, great visibility, spacious interior and ample head clearance," says Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia's vice president for sales and marketing.

As for the extended wait for Australian buyers, Toyota would tell us only that the Corolla Cross is anticipated to be a significant offering in a number of markets, and Australia's spot in the queue is simply part of a rollout being "progressively introduced over a broader time span".

"We thought it would be good for us to confirm that it will be coming in 2022, however as it is still quite early, a lot of details for us are yet to be locked in," a Toyota Australia spokesperson told CarAdvice.
