Toyota 2000GT to receive factory parts support

Toyota's iconic sports car from the late 1960s is about to benefit from new gearbox and differential parts production.

Toyota is about to start making new parts for one of its iconic models from the late 1960s, the 2000GT.

The Japanese car maker's performance division – Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) – has announced it will begin producing parts primarily for the transmission and differential, such as gears, crown wheel and pinion sets, synchro hubs, shift forks and bearing kits.

This new program makes the 2000GT the third Toyota to receive genuine parts support once again.

The third-generation A70 Supra, and fourth-generation A80 Supra were the first two Toyota models to benefit from the GR Heritage Parts Project.

Given how lucrative heritage parts production can be, other models are likely to be added to this program in the near future.

Toyota’s 2000GT has only recently risen to stardom.

It was only manufactured for three years, with the first examples being delivered in 1967.

All examples of the Toyota 2000GT were equipped with a then-revolutionary 2.0-litre double overhead cam straight-six engine, with a chassis that sported with double wishbone suspension and disc brakes at all corners, radial tyres, and magnesium alloy wheels.

Despite appearing in the James Bond film, You Only Live Twice, the Toyota 2000GT initially didn't receive critical acclaim.

A total of 337 were built, and many went unloved during the 1980s and 1990s.

Since then, with the rise in popularity of Japanese classic sports cars, the Toyota 2000GT has become among the most desirable and the most expensive among its peers.

The example pictured above is set to go to auction in October and is exopected to sell for in excess of $1 million.
