Audi A9 e-tron electric flagship due in 2024 – report

Audi will introduce its new A9 e-tron electric flagship sedan as soon as 2024, according to a new international report.

The A9 e-tron model will be one of the first developed under Audi’s Artemis project – an initiative announced by Audi CEO Markus Duesmann last month to “focus on new technologies for electric (and) highly automated driving” – as a step towards the brand’s goal of having 75 electric models by 2029.

First seen in 2016 as the Aicon concept – and unofficially dubbed the A9 – the new model will assume flagship status for Audi, according to British publication Autocar.

Audi’s A9 e-tron will present as a sedan with a sloping, coupe-like roof or as a lift-back, offering the external dimensions of the current A7, but with the interior space of the larger A8, the report says.

It's likely the A9 e-tron will use the latest in Audi’s electric drivetrain, battery cell and autonomous driving tech to rival the upcoming Mercedes-Benz’s EQS and Jaguar XJ autonomous electric flagship models.

According to the report, the A9 e-tron will also feature 5G connectivity, allowing use of ‘car-to-X’, augmented reality and over-the-air functions.

While technical specifications are not mentioned, Autocar does report Audi will work more closely with Porsche via the Artemis initiative, with a focus on electric platform development. The two brands collaborated on the ‘J1’ underpinnings used for the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GT.

A ‘PPE’ structure is also being developed by the brands for use in an electric 2022 Porsche Macan, but whether the J1 or PPE platform will be used for the A9 e-tron remains unclear.
