2021 BMW 2 Series coupe spy photos

BMW's new 2 Series coupe has been spied testing in what is likely M240i or M245i form.

The new-generation 2021 BMW 2 Series coupe has been spied testing in Mexico this week, adding credence to a pair of leaked photos that surfaced on Instagram in April.

While those earlier shots revealed what we can expect from the new coupe's front and rear styling, these new on-road photos offer our best look yet at the new model's muscly proportions and overall shape.

You could even be forgiven for thinking at a glance that this might be the hero M2, with those bulky guards, but we'd expect the flagship model to arrive later – and with a few extra treats like quad exhaust tips, bolder bumpers and bigger brakes. Maybe even with guards pumped beyond what's seen here.

The variant shown here, then, is likely the six-cylinder M240i equivalent – with some reports suggesting a comfortable power boost for the B58 inline-six to 260kW and maybe an upgraded M245i badge.

That would still be well below the 285kW offered with the larger M340i, of course.

It is also clear, as has been reported previously, that we can expect the two-door 2 Series models to continue with a rear-wheel drive configuration. That will likely see it ride on a version of the CLAR architecture that underpins larger BMW models.

Watch for more on the new 2 Series coupe to surface in the months ahead.
