2021 MG ZS facelift, ZST model revealed – UPDATE: Australian details announced

MG gives its compact ZS SUV an up-to-date redesign ahead of an all-new model likely to arrive in the next few years.

UPDATE, July 14: The 2021 MG ZST has now been announced for Australia. Details here.

UPDATE, July 6: a spokesperson for MG's Australian distributor has told CarAdvice today that while it could offer no word just yet on local timing and details for the 2021 MG ZS SUV, we can expect to learn more in the coming weeks.

July 4, 2020: A new-look 2021 MG ZS has launched in the UK this week, after first debuting in China last year. For 2020, the ZS again debuts a look that suggests a little bit of this and a little bit of that in its inspiration.

The decidedly more modern design comes as a mid-life makeover for the small SUV, which was first introduced at the 2016 Guangzhou Auto Show.

Just as the ZS did when it debuted after its larger GS sibling (replaced by the HS), the facelifted ZS will likely inform the styling direction of future updates and new-generation models.

Among its refreshed styling features are a new hexagonal grille design that drops the broad chrome frame of the outgoing model, along with sharp new LED headlights and a new bumper design.

Changes along the profile are limited to new wheel designs, while the rear debuts a new LED signature for the tail lights, and again a new bumper design that adds more visual width to the small SUV.

Inside, a larger 'floating' 10.1-inch display replaces the 8-inch unit of the current model, along with a digital driver display on high-spec models (known as Exclusive in the UK and Essence here).

New piano-style buttons also now sit beneath the display for audio and air-conditioning control.

No powertrain or other mechanical changes have been made, which for Australia should again mean 84kW/150Nm 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder and 82kW/160Nm 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engines.

Four-speed and six-speed automatic transmissions, and front-wheel drive, are also standard here – while in China, the four-speed has been dropped in favour of the Aisin torque-converter six-speed automatic already offered with the three-pot.

In April, details of approved powertrains were published on the Australian government's Road Vehicle Certification System. This listing showed not only the two configurations described above, but also a 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine – previously confirmed to offer 93kW and 230Nm in its overseas form.

Autonomous emergency braking is now featured, along with blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control.

Apple Carplay again features, along with Android Auto.

When will the 2021 MG ZS come to Australia?

The 2021 MG ZS has so far been revealed in UK-market form only, and word on local plans could not be obtained at the time of publishing.

A late 2020 or early 2021 Australian launch could be on the cards, however, given the timing of its UK debut.

CarAdvice has contacted MG's Australian distributor for further details.
