UPDATE, July 1: The new 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan has now officially been revealed. Read our story here.

The updated 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan has been spied without camouflage this week, in what is sure to be a final testing phase.

Volkswagen released a stylised teaser sketch for the German SUV's new look in April, but did not confirm an official unveiling date at the time – likely a result of the unfolding COVID-19 lockdown conditions.

At this stage, we could see the 2021 Tiguan join the growing circus of online unveilings, ahead of an Australian debut expected for the second quarter of 2021.

As the teaser image confirmed, the refreshed Tiguan will wear headlights similar to those of the new eight-generation Golf, with a grille design most recently seen on the small new T-Roc and T-Cross SUVs.

At the rear, Volkswagen's new theme of centralised model badging continues, flanked by subtly updated tail-lamp lighting signatures.

The model shown here appears to be an entry-level variant, likely the 110TSI or similar, but with a new R-Line front bumper attached.

Indeed, it may even be the bumper for the anticipated Tiguan R hero model, if the thin layer of camouflage on the face of a recently spied prototype is anything to go by.

Further details are still to come, although Volkswagen's earlier claim of a "redesigned interior" appears to be limited to the company's new steering wheel and redesigned climate controls in the centre stack.

New powertrains are also promised, but it remains to be seen if Australia will see any of those.

Recent moves suggest we could see the Tiguan follow the Golf 8's emissions regulations-driven specification of a 110kW 1.4-litre petrol engine and an eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission in place of the current model's 'DSG' dual-clutch unit.
