2021 Bentley Bentayga revealed, plug-in hybrid inbound

British luxury marque Bentley has revealed its updated Bentayga SUV, with new styling, cabin tech and an updated plug-in hybrid engine option in the works.

The updated four-, five- and seven-seater Bentayga will be powered by a familiar 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 producing 404kW/770Nm at launch, but will be joined by plug-in hybrid and 6.0-litre W12 engine ‘Speed’ variants later on. Outputs and driving range for the upgraded plug-in hybrid have not been revealed.

The V8 engine will again utilise cylinder deactivation technology and, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, propel the Bentayga from 0-60mph (0-97km/h) in just 4.4 seconds.

In its current form, the Bentayga Hybrid – not available in Australia – partners a 250kW 3.0-litre turbo petrol V6 with a 90kW electric motor and a 17.3kWh battery. The system claims a combined 330kW and fuel consumption figures of just 3.5L/100km, along with an electric driving range of up to 39 kilometres.

Whether we'll get the new Hybrid in Australia remains to be seen, although the increasingly chic appeal of green motoring could motivate Bentley to send it our way.

As for the W12, Bentley has confirmed it won't be long for this world. In the meantime, buyers can enjoy the same 497kW and 900Nm as offered before.

Bentley says the new Bentayga will not share a panel with the model it is replacing, adopting the brand’s new design language seen on the third-generation Continental GT and Flying Spur.

This means a larger front grille and restyled front bumper with new LED matrix headlights, a redesigned rear end including a new tailgate that runs the full width of the car, and redesigned tail lights that take cues from the Continental GT.

Revised tail pipe design and a 20mm increase to the track of the rear wheels also increases the sporty look of the Bentayga.

New 22-inch alloy wheels (unique to the Bentayga) will increase wheel options for buyers to a total of five.

A ‘wet-arm’ windscreen wiper with heating and 22 washer jets in each wiper arm will also debut on the Bentayga.

Inside, the refreshed Bentayga gets a new centre dash and steering design with revised door trims and seats. A new diamond brushed aluminium trim package can be had for the interior, joining existing Koa and Crown Cut Walnut wood trims.

Wireless Apple CarPlay will now be offered as standard, joining Android Auto on a new 10.9-inch touchscreen. A heads-up display and redesigned digital instrument cluster also feature.

Bentley emphasises rear passenger comfort in the new Bentayga, with seat ventilation now available for rear passengers in five-seat Bentayga variants – previously only offered on four-seat models.

Rear passengers also get up to 100mm more legroom and a larger five-inch removable infotainment tablet, allowing occupants to control the temperature, media system, navigation, lighting, and rear seat heating and massage.
