2021 Audi Q5 revealed, due in Australia next year

Audi’s best-selling SUV gets a refresh for 2021.

Audi has revealed details of its updated Q5, with the medium SUV set to gain new styling and technology when it reaches Australia next year.

The 2021 Audi Q5 gets a new single frame grille design that has been separated from the bonnet. A new headlight design has a redesigned daytime running light.

Elements of the front bumper and air intakes have been inspired by the brand’s hotter RS models, with a new line on the side of the body and rear diffuser adding a sportier look.

Digital OLED tail lights will feature on the Q5 – something Audi claims is a first for any car. Customers can select from three lighting animations for the tail lights. The animation cannot be changed using the vehicle’s infotainment system, however Audi says it plans to make this possible in the future.

New exterior colours of ‘district green’ and ‘ultra blue’ (the latter available on S line models) join the colour palette.

The 2021 Audi Q5 rides standard on 17-inch alloy wheels, with the S line variant riding on 18-inch alloys. Wheel sizes up to 21-inches can be optioned.

The Australian-delivered Audi Q5 will not get an off-road package, despite it being offered on the model in other regions.

The 2021 Audi Q5 picks up the Audi’s newest MIB3 infotainment system on a 10.1-inch touchscreen and does away with the centre control dial. The new software is voice command-capable and can operate three windows simultaneously.

A 12.3-inch digital cluster with three changeable graphic layouts comes as standard, and a heads-up display can be optioned.

New mild-hybrid systems will be offered elsewhere, but CarAdvice understands the engines found in the current Audi Q5 will be carried over for the Australian market.

These include a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel four-cylinder producing 150kW/400Nm in 40 TDI trim, a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder outputting 183kW/370Nm in 45 TFSI trim and a 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel six-cylinder that makes 210kW/610Nm in 50 TDI trim.

All models will send power through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission to all four wheels.

For now, there is no word on timing for an update to the SQ5, although Audi Australia has confirmed the anticipated SQ5 TDI diesel variant – which was due to go on sale here in mid-2020 – has been pushed back but should still reach local showrooms by the end of this year.

Buyers should note however that the SQ5 TDI that lands here in late 2020 will be the current, pre-facelift body and not the refreshed design shown here.

Australia

An Australian debut for the refreshed Q5 is set for the first half 2021, with details and more specific timing to be revealed closer to launch.
