Lordstown Endurance electric ute revealed, Rivian R1T shown in testing

The Lordstown Endurance has been officially unveiled as Rivian shows off footage of its electric ute completing desert testing.

The fully-electric 2021 Lordstown Endurance dual-cab ute made its official debut overnight, featuring an individual electric motor on each of its four wheels.

Lordstown claims the Endurance has the fewest moving parts of any production vehicle, all but eliminating mechanical fatigue and significantly reducing maintenance costs.

Power is listed as 447kW from the in-hub electric motors, and a 400 kilometre range (based on the EPA standard) is claimed. The Endurance will do the 0-100km/h sprint in roughly five-and-a-half seconds.

No specifications have been provided for the battery pack, nor are any interior photos supplied.

The unveiling event of the Endurance showed footage of the electric pick-up being developed and tested before the vehicle was driven on-stage live.

US Vice President Mike Pence was in the passenger seat of the Endurance and officially launched the model at the company's plant in Lordstown, Ohio. The factory was previously owned by General Motors.

The 2021 Lordstown Endurance is available to pre-order in America for US$52,500 (AU$76,300), or roughly the same price as a Ford F-150 Lariat 4WD. For context, the soon-to-be-replaced Ford F-150 starts at US$28,745 (AU$41,800).

Rivian R1T in desert testing

Rivian has given the best look at its upcoming R1T electric pick-up yet, with new video released by the company overnight showing off the model completing desert testing.

The fully-electric dual-cab pick-up was seen undergoing stress testing, including off-roading across rocky terrain and enthusiastic driving on both loose and sealed surfaces.

The video shows the Rivian R1T being driven dramatically in a series of controlled slides.

As early as 2018, Rivian has said the R1T will be offered in a number of specifications.

The entry-level 105kWh model claims 300kW/560Nm and 370km of range, while the top-spec 180kWh battery pack is expected to produce 562kW/1120Nm with a 650km range.

The Rivian R1T will be priced from around $USD69,000, and a right-hand-drive version will be produced.

A Rivian spokesperson told CarAdvice in 2019 the R1T is planned for release in Australia.

The Lordstown and Rivian models are two of ten electric utes expected in the coming years. The 2021 Ford F-150 which was also unveiled today will offer a fully-electric option in 2022.
