2021 Genesis G70 revealed in factory photo leak

The new G80's bold new look has trickled down to the mid-sized G70. Will it help boost sales?

The refreshed 2021 Genesis G70 has been revealed ahead of time this week, thanks to a pair of leaked photos.

Surfacing on The Korean Car Blog this week, these images offer our best look yet at the G70's complete front and rear makeover.

Where the premium sedan previously wore a handsome if somewhat anonymous look, its midlife refresh brings the car in line with the new-generation G80 sedan with its unique 'double-line Quadlamp' lighting and 'Crest Grille'.

The rear-end gets the same treatment, with a new boot lid, new double-line tail lamps, a new bumper with relocated number-plate position, and huge new Bentley-like exhausts.

Leaked photos are rarely flattering – snapped too close, on 'potato phones' and from poor angles – but these shots, along with earlier on-road spy photos, at least reveal the extent of what we can expect on the outside.

A look at the cabin suggests we can expect much of the current model's interior design to carry over, although a larger main display appears to be visible atop the centre console.

Power – at least in top models – is expected to be supplied by the G80's newer, larger 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6, producing 279kW and 588Nm. This would replace the 272kW/510Nm 3.3-litre unit that drives the current model (and the Kia Stinger).

The current G70 also gets 180kW/353Nm 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol engine, which will likely be replaced by the G80's new 223kW/421Nm 2.5-litre turbo four.

Expect the new model to be revealed in the coming months.

Earlier coverage by Joshua Dowling, with updated numbers

When Genesis launched in Australia in May 2019, the global boss of the division said at the time that prices would not be negotiable.

However, in May, Genesis Australia began running a promotion offering 20 per cent off selected models, presumably to make way for the rush of fresh metal coming later in the year.

So far this year Genesis has posted a sales gain (up 13.5 per cent) in a market that is down by 23.9 per cent from the start of January through to the end of May.

However, that growth is from a low base: from 37 to 42 vehicles reported as sold over the first four months of this year (26 of those were for the G70).

Last year, Genesis Australia sold just 103 vehicles, although it had only opened its first showroom in May.
