Hugh Jackman could play Enzo Ferrari in biopic – report

A new biopic about the Ferrari founder could star Australian movie star Hugh Jackman.

A new film about Enzo Ferrari – the founder of the famous Italian sportscar company and Formula One racing team – could have Hugh Jackman in the starring role, according to a report by Variety.

The biopic, to be directed by Michael Mann, is based on the Brock Yates novel Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races, the Machine, and was originally adapted for the screen by The Italian Job screenwriter Troy Kennedy Martin.

Rumours of Australian actor Hugh Jackman playing Enzo Ferrari date back to 2017, but reports of Jackman in the part are again coming to light after distribution rights for the film were sold at the Cannes Film Festival.

Set in the summer of 1957, the film is based on a tumultuous period for the founder of the famous Italian sports car company.

Enzo Ferrari's firstborn son Dino died a year earlier, his car company was struggling, and his marriage was facing difficulties after an affair between Ferrari and Lina Lardi that resulted in the birth of his second son Piero.

The film, currently in pre-production, is expected to follow Enzo Ferrari as he enters his vehicles the Mille Miglia, the infamous 1000 mile road race across Italy.

The Mille Miglia was banned following the 1957 race after a Ferrari 335 S driven by Spainiard Alfonso de Portago crashed, killing himself, his co-driver, and nine spectators – five of which were children.

Michael Mann is best known for his 1995 film Heat, starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.
