Nissan R34 Skyline GT-R V-Spec sets price record

This cult-classic Nissan Skyline sold for the equivalent of more than $200,000.

A new record has been set for the price paid for a Nissan R34 Skyline GT-R V-Spec at auction.

Despite having 65,000km on the odometer and being 20 years old – built between 1999 and 2000 – the hammer fell last month at 15,105,000 Japanese Yen ($AUD206,000).

That's half the price of the most expensive Nissan GT-R of all time, however it is believed to be the most paid for this particular model.

One of the main reasons for the record price was its paint colour – Midnight Purple III.

This particular car was one of only 132 finished in the highly-sought after colour, from a total production run of 4193 V-Spec editions.

The V-Spec trim level was sold alongside the base model GTR for one year of production only. Despite two colours being rarer – Lightning Yellow and Active Red – Midnight Purple III remains a fan favourite, as demonstrated by the final sale price of this particular example.

CarAdvice apologises for the poor quality photos as, remarkably, these were the only images made available by the Japanese auction house managing the sale, including to those bidding.

The purple example isn't the most expensive Nissan GT-R R34 ever sold at auction according to GTR-Registry.com, with that title going to a base-white coloured V-Spec II Nür (Nurburgring edition, made from 2001 to 2002), which fetched 32,000,000 Japanese Yen ($AUD431,000) at BH auction's Tokyo Auto Salon event in 2018.

It's worth noting the white example showed only 10 kilometres on the odometer since new.

That's in stark comparison to the Midnight Purple III V-Spec record holder that this story is about, which had 65,000 kilometres on the odometer.

Japanese hero cars are fast becoming a modern classic. A 1997 Toyota Supra was recently advertised for twice as much as a new Supra.

It follows the sale of another classic Toyota Supra which recently traded for $US173,600 ($AU248,000), comfortably outselling a 1976 Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera, at the same RM Sotheby's event.

Last month an immaculate example of a year 2000 Honda Civic Si two-door coupe sold for $US50,000 ($AU72,000). With just 5644 miles on the odometer (9083km), it looked like new. It is unclear if the new owner will keep it as a collector piece or use it as a daily driver.
