2021 MG HS Essence price and specs

MG has at last confirmed a third model in its new HS line-up.

CarAdvice testing of the 2020 MG HS has revealed it is undoubtedly the most proficient new vehicle to come from the revitalised MG Motor Company.

With a five-star ANCAP rating and above average driving dynamics, the HS is well-positioned to make some headway in the incredibly competitive medium SUV segment.

The only question – both at launch and since – is related to the model range.

UPDATE (19/6/2020): This story has been updated to include MG HS Essence pricing.

With such sharp pricing, was MG planning on adding another variant to the two-model 2020 MG HS range? That question has been answered. A third model has now been confirmed, with Essence joining Vibe and Excite in MG dealers around Australia.

Priced at $36,990 plus on-road costs, the Essence sits above the Vibe ($30,990 plus on-road costs) and the Excite ($34,790 plus on-road costs) in both price and specification.

All HS models are powered by a 119kW/250Nm 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine, matched to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Fuel consumption is claimed at 7.3L/100km.

Essence specification grade is a five-seat HS, with a panoramic ‘Stargazer’ sunroof, a 360-degree camera for full visibility at low speed, the option of a red interior and sportier seat design. For now, that's all we know about standard specification for our market.

Across the HS range, buyers get a suite of standard, high-tech driving assistance aids (MG Pilot), making a big play toward the five-star ANCAP rating. HS also gets MG’s standard seven-year warranty and roadside assistance package.

Almost immediately, and perhaps unsurprisingly given the popularity of the segment, the HS hit the ground running in our local market.

“The MG HS has proved to be a popular addition to our range,” Peter Ciao, CEO of MG Motor Australia/New Zealand said.

“Moving into the second half of this year, the range-topping, yet value-driven model is one we’re excited to bring to our customers, with a range of additional features we know they will enjoy."

2020 looks set to be a big year for MG in Australia, with not just the expansion of the HS range, but also the arrival of the all-electric ZS EV, and a continued rollout of an expanded dealer network around the country.

MG recently announced five new dealers for its growing network – all in Victoria – a further indication of how seriously parent company SAIC is taking the Australian market.

“We’re grateful for our customers ongoing support and warm reception to our innovative product range,” Ciao said.

“Our continued growth, with new dealer partners and exciting new iterations like HS Essence, provides more choice and better access for service and sales around the country.”
