Update, June 16: the new 2021 Lexus IS is now official. Full story here.

The new-look 2021 Lexus IS has been revealed just hours ahead of its official unveiling, thanks to a set of leaked images that have appeared on Instagram and YouTube.

The images, although low-quality (particularly the YouTube shots) offer a comprehensive look at what we'll see when the covers come off tomorrow morning.

As expected, the mid-sized sedan has been given a major exterior makeover, with – it appears – not a single panel left untouched and with both ends dramatically redesigned.

The new model is understood to be a reworking of the existing IS rather than a move to a new platform, with the rear-wheel-drive TNGA-L architecture that underpins the larger Lexus LS and LC models – said to be incompatible with the dimensions needed to suit the mid-sized IS sedan.

Although less common than the usual facelift, a full-body makeover is not unheard of. The Golf 6 was largely a complete reskin of the 5, with only the roof carrying over. Likewise, the 2009-launched W212 E-Class was given an all-round new look to see it through to the debut of the W213 in 2017.

As the below interior image shows, however, the bulk of the restyling has occurred on the outside, with only minor changes made to the inside.

Full details on the new-look 2021 Lexus IS will be released in the coming hours.

Until then, feast your eyes on the images below and tell us what you think, in the comments.
