Jeep Australia steps in to help victims of domestic violence

An old mobile phone could save a life, and now Jeep dealerships are being added as donation drop-off points.

Jeep dealerships across Australia have partnered with DV Safe Phone to help ensure victims of domestic violence have access to a mobile phone.

DV Safe Phone (DV is police-speak for domestic violence) collects used mobile phones, donated by the public, then tests and repairs them before distributing them, along the Red Rose Foundation, to victims of domestic violence.

The program started as a pilot in Queensland with a stated aim of collecting 300 mobile phones by the end of May 2020. With that target reached within three weeks, DV Safe Phone started to look at taking the program nationwide.

“Many households have at least one old mobile phone at the bottom of a drawer, which has been forgotten about. What people don’t realise is that this phone may just save a life,” the founder of DV Safe Phone, Ashton Wood, said in a media statement.

“What we really needed was a company with a national presence, a brand people would recognise and somewhere with ample parking for phone drop-offs. Jeep dealerships were the obvious choice.”

Jeep dealerships across Australia are now serving as collection points for the used mobile phones.

People donating phones are strongly urged to erase all data from their devices before dropping them off.

DV Safe Phone then collects the mobiles, tests them for functionality and makes sure all your personal data has been erased correctly.

“(Jeep Australia) is honoured to be working with such an important cause, especially during this challenging and unprecedented time,” said Kevin Flynn, the managing director of FCA Australia, the parent company of Jeep.

“Opening up the Jeep dealer network as drop-off point locations across the nation will allow Australians to easily donate unwanted and discarded devices to help support those struggling,” he said.

With reported incidents of domestic violence increasing during the COVID-19 pandemic, access to communication is vital for those looking to leave abusive partners.
