2020 Porsche Cayenne GTS V8 price and specs

Happy days are here, Porsche's Cayenne GTS is once again a muscly V8 monster.

It's back. Porsche has stopped short of an outright apology in its press release this week, acknowledging that in GTS models, "the powertrain plays a particularly important part".

As it did with the return of six-cylinder power in the Cayman GTS, Porsche has blessed its 2020 Cayenne GTS with the engine it deserves: a V8.

Where it had earlier traded its predecessor's 4.8-litre naturally-aspirated V8 for a 323kW/600Nm twin-turbo V6, the 2020 Cayenne GTS is motivated by a 338kW/620Nm bi-turbo 4.0-litre V8.

That upgrade gives the GTS a 0-100km/h time of 4.5 seconds in both wagon and Coupé form, with the Sport Chrono package fitted as standard to both.

By comparison, the previous turbo-six GTS (which launched in 2015 from $154,600) claimed a 5.1-second run, while the more powerful 404kW/770Nm 2020 Cayenne Turbo shades both with a 4.1-second time.

In gaining 4.0-litre V8 power and latest-generation kit, pricing climbs to $192,900 for the GTS wagon and $198,200 for the GTS Coupé before on-road costs, slotting them between the 2.9-litre S and 4.0-litre Turbo models. (See our price list at bottom of story.)

Other features of the new GTS wagon include an exhaust system designed to produce a particularly rich sound (so Porsche says). In that form, quad tailpipes feature at the corners of the rear bumper.

Opt for the GTS Coupé however, and there's the option of a new high-frequency exhaust system mounted in the centre of the bumper.

The GTS Coupé is the first to get this option, as part of the Lightweight Sports Package (priced from $17,540), and it will appear on the Cayenne Turbo Coupé in a future update.

The GTS models ride as standard on a three-chamber adaptive air suspension system that lowers the car by 10mm, along with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) damper control.

Also standard is Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus, along with 21-inch RS Spyder Design wheels and 390x38mm front / 358x28mm rear cast iron brakes and red callipers.

Styling sees dark-tinted lighting at both ends (with LED, Porsche Dynamic Light System up front), and a black design to the front air intakes, side window trims, and tailpipes of the sports exhaust system. Badges are also in black.

Inside, there's Alcantara trim to the roof lining, seat centre panels, armrests and doors, along with dark-brushed aluminium.

A set of eight-way sports seats are exclusive to the GTS (the Turbo gets 14-way Comfort seats).
