2023 BMW X1 spy photos

BMW's next-generation compact luxury SUV caught testing in heavy camouflage.

The 2023 BMW X1 has been spied testing more than two years before its expected launch.

The new model is so secret our spy photographers cut out the background to hide exactly where it was caught on camera.

Despite the heavy camouflage, the BMW X1 prototype appears to be sporting larger "coffin-shaped" kidney grilles – similar to those recently revealed on the 2021 BMW 4 Series Coupé – but only running half the depth of the front bumper bar.

While following in the same upright body shape of the current BMW X1, the front-end does appear to have a more aggressive design thanks to wrap-around headlights and what could be a more pointed bonnet.

The engineers at BMW have gone to a lot of trouble to hide the shape of the bonnet, indicating that sharper lines seen on the current BMW X5 may be carried over to the new X1.

It's expected that the 2023 BMW X1 will be offered in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive, with traditional combustion engines or a choice of plug-in hybrid and fully-electric powertrains.

Though the prototype BMW X1 pictured is thought to have been powered by a regular combustion engine, it was seen testing alongside a facelifted version of the upcoming fully-electric X3, which will be badged as the iX3.

The fully-electric version of the BMW X1 will likely be badged as the iX1.

Rumours suggest the next-generation BMW X1 will feature an ultra-minimalist interior with many environmentally-conscious materials previously seen in the BMW i3.
