What Marty McFly’s Toyota HiLux would look like today

One of the stars of the Back To The Future movie series has been reimagined in our Dream Garage. Should Toyota build a tribute edition?

The 2021 Toyota HiLux has been given the Marty McFly treatment as a tribute to the Back To The Future movie series from the 1980s.

While this computer-generated rendering (pictured above) comes from the imagination of the CarAdvice team and our resident Photoshop guru Theophilus Chin, it got us thinking about what it would take for Toyota to build a modern version of the black HiLux from the movie franchise that shot Michael J Fox to stardom.

While the Back To The Future movie series is famous among car enthusiasts for its link to the ill-fated Delorean sports car that doubled as a time machine, the other four-wheeled star was the humble Toyota HiLux with KC driving lights, small nudge bar, and blacked out bodywork and wheels.

In case you missed it, here is a really cool video about the original car from the movie and how it was rescued after allegedly being used by Mexican drug couriers:

Our modern take of the Marty McFly Toyota HiLux is based on the two-door space-cab variant of the top-of-the-range Rocco edition sold in Thailand.

While double-cab utes are more popular than space cab utes in Australia, in Thailand the two-door models account for a large portion of sales.

While it is only speculation at this point, we reckon the Toyota HiLux Rocco edition will form at least some of the basis of the 2021 Toyota HiLux Rogue, but with extra modifications fitted locally.

In the meantime, let us know in the comments below if Toyota should approach the movie company to get permission to do a Back To The Future tribute edition of the HiLux. If it’s good enough for Ford to revive the Bullitt Mustang, surely this is a candidate.
