Mazda announces prices for 700 limited-edition 100th anniversary models – UPDATE

Some familiar favourites will receive an aesthetic makeover to celebrate the Japanese brand's centenary.

UPDATE, 2/10/20: This article was originally published in June 2020 but has been updated with pricing details for several of Mazda's 100th Anniversary special edition models. Details in the story.

Mazda has confirmed the Australian arrival of 700 limited models in honour of its 100th anniversary, with its entire range of vehicles receiving the special-edition upgrade.

However, the number of limited-edition variants available depends on the model, with 250 special 100th Anniversary CX-5 SUVs on offer, but only five Mazda 6 wagons available.

The range honours 100 years since Mazda was first founded in Japan on January 30, 1920, with the special-edition designs drawing inspiration from the brand's first-ever passenger car, the R360 Coupe – a model that was never offered in the Australian market.

The roll-out of the special editions in our market will be staggered, with model-specific launch timing yet to be announced.

In keeping with the R36's distinctive looks, all special edition vehicles are finished in Snowflake White Pearl Mica paint with Burgundy leather interior, plus embossed 100th anniversary badging on headrests, front fenders, key fobs, hub caps and floor mats.

The anniversary editions are built on existing high-grade models, with no specification changes beyond the aesthetic additions.

Pricing for the limited-edition offerings marks around a $1000-2500 increase on pricing for top-spec variants in each range, depending on the model.

For example, the 100th Anniversary edition of the CX-5 is priced from $52,330 plus on-road costs, $1500 more than the top-spec CX-5 Akera AWD petrol variant upon which it is based, while the limited Mazda 3 offering is $40,090 – $2500 more than the G25 Astina variants.

Mazda is yet to share pricing for Mazda CX-3 and Mazda CX-9.

While the 2.2-litre diesel CX-8 is currently the most expensive offering in the limited range, the hero car is evidently the MX-5 convertible, complete with Burgundy-coloured soft-top roof (pictured at the top of the story).

Only 10 units will be available in MX-5 soft-top form, while the hard-top RF version will also be available to 10 buyers.

“We’re all incredibly proud to celebrate Mazda’s 100th anniversary by being able to offer these special vehicles to our customers,” Mazda Australia Director of Sales, Jarrod Gieschen, said.

“We’re grateful to have a loyal and passionate customer base in Australia and to say thank you, we’ll be offering those that register their interest the first opportunity to secure their vehicle order.

“The vehicles will look elegant and striking on the road today, and serve as a proud Mazda collector’s item tomorrow.”
