Polestar and Koenigsegg appear to be teaming up for a new project

The two Swedish innovators have hinted at a collaboration.

Swedish performance car brands Polestar and Koenigsegg have teased an upcoming video collaboration that could see a showdown between their two latest models.

The Swedish carmakers took to their respective Instagram accounts to promote the new project, sharing photos of the Polestar Precept all-electric concept vehicle and the Koenigsegg Gemera plug-in hybrid megacar side-by-side.

UPDATE (5/6/20): This story has been updated with a statement from Koenigsegg. Details in story.

"Something exciting coming soon. Stay tuned. #KoenigseggXPolestar," Koenigsegg captioned its post.

Polestar, meanwhile, teased: "Something interesting is happening on the west coast of Sweden. Stay tuned."

When contacted by CarAdvice, a representative for Koenigsegg said the collaboration would be an "informal video initiative".

"Polestar and Koenigsegg are two progressive automotive companies based in Sweden that have decided to collaborate on an informal video initiative emphasizing on their two new cars that were intended to be debuted in Geneva in March this year. The content will be released on 21 June at 12:00 CEST," the spokesperson said.

However, the exact nature of the video is unclear, with speculation pointing to a performance showdown between the Precept and the Gemera.

Polestar revealed its Precept concept vehicle – a possible rival for the Tesla Model S – in February 2020, but exact performance figures and powertrain details are yet to be shared.

Should it enter production, the Precept would mark Polestar's third model after the Polestar 1 and Polestar 2, with the latter expected to land in Australia in late 2020.

Meanwhile, Koenigsegg debuted its $2.56 million, four-seater Gemera at roughly the same time as the Precept, describing it as the world's first "Mega-GT" thanks to its family-friendly seating configuration (complete with ISOFIX points) and massive outputs.

The Gemera is capable of 1270kW and 3500Nm from its plug-in hybrid powertrain, which consists of three electric motors and a 2.0-litre, three-cylinder twin-turbo Freevalve engine, plus 800-volt battery.

A collaboration between Koenigsegg and Polestar makes sense considering both brands are relatively new players in the automotive industry and both are headquartered in Sweden.

Polestar, much like its parent company Volvo, operates a head office in Gothenburg on Sweden's west coast, while Koenigsegg's headquarters are located roughly two hours away, in a decomissioned air force building in the town of Ängelholm.

Koenigsegg was founded by current CEO Christian von Koenigsegg in 1994, while Polestar had its origins as a Volvo-tuning racing division, but relaunched as an all-electric performance brand in October 2017, two years after it was officially bought by Volvo in 2015 (Volvo is now owned by Chinese company Geely).
