2021 BMW 4 Series revealed, due in Australia in October

Official photos show BMW's controversial new grille, flagship M440i xDrive earmarked for Australia.

The all-new 2021 BMW 4 Series Coupé has been officially unveiled overnight in Europe, with its striking nose design dividing BMW fans across the world.

But it's not just looks, with the second generation BMW 4 Series Coupé also seeing the introduction of the M440i xDrive as its flagship model. Owners can expect a 3.0-litre twin-scroll turbo in-line six-cylinder sending 285kW and 500Nm to all four wheels via an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission.

Though official acceleration figures are yet to be released, the new BMW 4 Series Coupé is expected to be on-par with the M340i xDrive sedan, taking a claimed 4.4 seconds to reach 100km/h.

Entry-level 420i and middle-of-the-range 430i models will also be available, producing 135kW/300Nm and 190kW/400Nm respectively from twin-scroll turbo petrol four cylinder engines, also with an eight-speed automatic.

While these drivetrains have previously been installed in the 3 Series, the new 4 Series Coupé offers a much more aggressive stance, with its roofline sitting 57mm lower and its wheels tracking 23mm wider. This gives the G22 BMW 4 Series a centre-of-gravity 21mm lower than its sedan counterpart on which it's based, improving handling characteristics.

All dimensions have been increased over the outgoing model. The new BMW 4 Series Coupé has grown in length by 128mm to 4,768mm, width by 27mm to 1,852mm, and the wheelbase has extended by 41mm to 2,851mm. It's lower, wider, and longer.

The main talking point is the car's design. The two-door coupé has taken a bold step away from its BMW 3 Series sibling, introducing a new evolution of the marque's iconic kidney grilles, which have been described by some media as "coffin shaped".

Much of the design language on the new BMW 4 Series Coupé appears to have flowed down from the flagship BMW 8 Series Coupé.

For those wishing to subdue the kidney grilles, BMW 4 Series Coupés with the M Sport trim may have the ability to option a blacked-out grille frame in place of the standard brushed aluminium look. Carbon fibre may also be optioned for the wing mirrors, front spoiler air ducts, rear lip spoiler, and rear lower diffuser.

The contentious kidney grille is not the only evolution in design seen, however.

The all-new 4 Series Coupé makes a departure from the famed 'Hoffmeister Kink', the trademark C-pillar design featured on BMWs since the early 1960s. Though not entirely gone, the pinched window helps to emphasise the muscular rear quarter panel, giving the car a more aggressive attitude.

LED headlights are now standard on the new 4 Series, though BMW's Laserlight can be optioned. The addition of Laserlight provides cornering light ability, variable illumination depending on the environment, and its party piece: a high-beam range of 500 metres when travelling above 60km/h.

On the inside, BMW appears to have focused more on the fit and finish than any radical change in design. The quality of the materials is a big step-up from the previous generation 4 Series, with a Sensatec synthetic leather-clad dashboard and Aluminium Tetragon highlights. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be available with BMW Live Cockpit Professional.

When will the new BMW 4 Series come to Australia?
