UPDATE: BMW M has released a tasty teaser development video for its upcoming new M3. We've embedded it at the end of this story.

The new-generation 2021 BMW M3 has been spied testing numerous times, and this week it has been spied again with a number of enhancements.

Although it wears as much camouflage as we've seen previously, a few visible extras make it clear – or as clear as can be at this stage – that this car is likely equipped with some M Performance goodies.

Setting this prototype apart from the 'regular' M3 we've spied before are a front lip and boot-lid lip spoiler, along with a unique wheel design. A staggered layout to the rolling stock is also clear.

The cabin is likewise as heavily camouflaged as always, though some option carbon-fibre sports seats can be seen clearly.

There has been speculation online that these photos might actually show the CS model, but it is likely too soon for that variant to have been spied – and the presence of a sunroof suggests it is missing the necessary carbon-fibre roof.

It could, however, be the Competition model, expected to output 380kW from its S58 3.0-litre in-line turbo six, tied to BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system. This same tune is already featured with the BMW X3 M and X4 M SUVs.

Indeed, in its latest teaser video, shown below, BMW M confirms the M3 will be available in both rear- and all-wheel drive.

Whatever the case, we should know more by September, with the new M3 expected to enter production before the year is out.

And, with the new 4 Series coupe now shown, we have some idea of how the new M3's front end will look.
