Audi's new A6 allroad 45TDI isn't the only new addition to the company's large-car line-up, with the new 2020 Audi A6 40TFSI joining the range this week.

As with the allroad, the 40TFSI model's debut follows the phased rollout of the wider new-generation A6 family in 2019.

NOTE: This story has been illustrated with the up-spec A6 45TFSI. We will replace with 40TFSI images as they become available.

The 40TFSI debuts as the entry model in the A6 range, slotting in beneath the $95,500 45TFSI quattro with a price of $85,500 before on-road costs.

In cutting the price of entry into the A6 family by $10,000, the 40TFSI misses out on quattro all-wheel drive, and 'makes do' with a less powerful engine.

Power in the A6 40TFSI is provided by a 140kW/320Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine – a moderate step down from the 180kW and 370Nm offered with the tune of the previous entry model, the 45TFSI model.

Power is sent to the front wheels through Audi's seven-speed 'S tronic' dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Fuel use is listed at 6.3L/100km on the combined cycle, and CO2 emissions are listed at 144g/km. With a 0-100km/h time of 7.9 seconds, the 40TFSI is no slouch, although the 45TFSI claims a much sharper 6.0-second run.

Standard equipment for the A6 40TFSI partly mirrors that of the 45TFSI quattro, including 19-inch alloy wheels, Matrix LED headlights, heated front seats, MMI Navigation with MMI Touch response using dual 10.1- and 8.6-inch displays, Audi virtual cockpit (a 12.3-inch display behind the steering wheel), Audi Connect Plus internet and app connectivity, wireless phone charging, and the Audi Music Interface with four USB points (two in each row).

Boot capacity is listed at 530 litres, and towing capacity is rated at 2000kg braked and 750kg unbraked.

All Audi models come with a three-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, which positions it behind Mercedes, Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo and Genesis. The company is trialling a five-year warranty right now, but only on models purchased in May and June of 2020.
