The car with an entertainment screen for the front seat passenger

A Chinese car company has come up with an entertainment screen for front seat passengers.

A United States patent application by Chinese electric car maker Nio has revealed details of a new entertainment screen for the front-seat passenger.

While the patent is more focused on an airbag module named the ‘adaptive backup structure for airbag support’, design diagrams show a screen placed on the dash ahead of the front passenger seat.

As reported by Chinese publication Chinapev, Nio’s new screen will be mounted on the passenger-side of the dash, but can be tilted towards the driver.

It is unclear if such a design would be legal on Australian roads, because the driver can be issued a ticket if it is deemed a distraction, even if it is mounted on the passenger side of the car.

According to the diagrams, the airbag's design also appears to tilt the screen back away from the passenger during inflation while also protecting occupants from collision with the centre of the dash.

In other markets, Nio currently sells four cars – the ES6 (pictured at top of story), ES8, EC6 and EP9 – with an Eve concept in the works, however it's unclear which models will get the passenger-side entertainment screen.

A passenger-side-mounted entertainment screen is not new, though.

Porsche has shown off similar technology on its new Taycan electric sports car, however the German brand's offering is fixed into the dash and cannot be tilted.
