2021 Mercedes-AMG E53 4Matic+ coupe and convertible unveiled

Mercedes-AMG has given its E53 coupe and convertible a mid-life facelift, with the refreshed two-door models expected to arrive in Australia in October.

The 2021 Mercedes-AMG E53 carries over the same 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine used in the current model, equipped with a conventional turbocharger and an electronic turbocharger.

Outputs remain unchanged at 320KW and 520Nm, with a nine-speed AMG-tuned automatic transmission sending power to all wheels through the 4Matic+ system.

Mercedes-Benz’s EQ Boost 48-volt system adds 16kW/250Nm in short bursts to improve engine response and efficiency.

Outside, the 2021 Mercedes-AMG E53 gets a redesigned front end including updated grille, headlights and a new bumper design.

There are new 10-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels, with a 20-inch option available in matte black or high-gloss titanium grey finishes.

New graphite grey metallic and matte brilliant blue magno colours join exterior paint options, with an optional night package blacking out side mirror housings, window frames, tailpipe surrounds and trim pieces in the front and rear bumper.

An optional carbon package adds carbon-fibre highlights to trims around the car and finishes the boot lid lip spoiler in the exotic material.

Inside, Mercedes-Benz’s new intelligent steering wheel with ‘hands-on’ technology ensures drivers maintain contact with the wheel while driving.

If the technology senses a driver’s hands have been away from the wheel for a certain amount of time, the system will display warnings and eventually activate emergency brake assist if the driver does not respond.

The steering wheel can be trimmed in a choice of leather, dinamica microfibre or a combination of the two.

Buyers will be able to option AMG Dynamic Plus on the 2021 E53 – the first time the technology has been offered on a six-cylinder Mercedes-AMG model. The package adds race and drift driving modes – joining slipper, comfort, sport, sport+ and individual – providing further adjustment in the car’s air suspension.
