2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC spy photos

The next-generation Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV has been caught on camera three years ahead of its showroom arrival.

May, 2020: Spy photos have emerged of the second-generation Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV three years before it is due in showrooms.

Rarely are prototypes out on public roads so far ahead of their release date, but we’re guessing Mercedes-Benz is fast-tracking development of what has become a key model for the brand.

The current Mercedes-Benz GLC – which went into production in 2015 – only just received its mid-life facelift, but already engineers are working on the second generation model.

Presumably they are getting in early because it is a heavily revised platform designed to better accommodate hybrid and plug-in hybrid technology – in addition to a choice of new four-cylinder and six-cylinders in petrol and diesel.

UPDATE, August 2020: New photos of the 2023 GLC have surfaced this week, but they are no more revealing than the camouflaged vehicle shown in these photos. This story is unchanged.

The photos show the proportions are similar to today's model but, as with its C-Class sedan sibling, expect the next GLC SUV to have an even roomier interior.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC has proven to be one of the most popular models for the German carmaker, as it capitalises on the global shift away from conventional passenger vehicles and towards SUVs.

In Australia last year, the Mercedes-Benz GLC was the brand’s second most popular model behind the Mercedes C-Class and ahead of the Mercedes A-Class.

Indeed, it sold at almost three times the rate of the full size Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV.

Mercedes-Benz Australia declined to comment on the next-generation GLC SUV or offer any insight as to when it might be due.

However, given that the mid-life facelift only went on sale in Australia last year, CarAdvice understands that means there is at least three years remaining in the current model cycle.

By those calculations we won’t see the second generation Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV until 2023, or thereabouts.

In the meantime, we will keep you updated as we unearth more information and more spy photos.
