General Motors’ million-mile battery is ‘almost there’

GM enters a race with Tesla to produce the world's first million-mile battery pack.

US car maker General Motors has been working on a battery it claims will last for 1 million miles (1.61 million kilometres) of electric car driving – and the technology is “almost there”, according to the company’s executive vice president.

Speaking during an online investor conference earlier in the week, GM’s Doug Parks said the brand was focusing “multiple teams” on the development of its next-generation battery technology, according to news outlet Reuters.

GM’s new battery is believed to utilise solid-state electrolytes, cobalt-free electrodes and be ultra-fast charging capable.

Park’s statement follows news earlier this month that electric car specialist Tesla had filed a patent application for new battery technology that is speculated to last for more than 1 million miles of driving by way of new electrode and electrolyte materials.

Reuters reports that GM's new technology may supersede its existing ‘Ultium’ platform that was announced in March this year and is set for use in 19 different configurations including the electric Hummer EV.

Last month, GM and Honda announced a joint venture to co-develop two electric cars for the North American market built with Ultium technology.
