2018-2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class recalled, safety features may not work in a crash
Wiring that controls vital safety features may fail during normal wear and tear among certain Mercedes G Wagens.
Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall of 155 examples of its 2018-2019 G-Class 463 Series SUVs sold as Mercedes-AMG G63 due to a defect in wiring that operates safety features in the event of a crash.
The recall notice, lodged with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), says a wiring harness may be damaged during regular opening and closing of the front doors.
Mercedes-Benz Australia says that – depending on which wire in the harness is damaged – the defect may result in a delayed deployment of airbags, airbags that do not deploy at all, and/or the automatic door unlock function not working in the instance of a crash.
There is also a chance that when the car contacts emergency services following an airbag deployment, it may register the wrong seating position in the car as being affected.
If any of the above functions fail during an accident, there is a risk of serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, says the recall.
Mercedes-Benz Australia has told CarAdvice there are no known instances of the failure on Australian-delivered cars.
Mercedes-Benz Australia is asking customers to contact a dealership of their choosing for inspection and repair of the faulty unit.
Vehicles included in the recall were sold between 1 August 2018 and 31 March 2019.
