Mazda MX-30 electric car starts production, still not confirmed for Australia

Mazda's first electric vehicle has commenced production, but it may not be heading to Australia.

Japanese car maker Mazda has begun production of its first all-electric model – the MX-30 city SUV – ahead of its European release later this year, however the model's Australian plans remain unclear.

While the local arm of Mazda says it is keen to bring the MX-30 here, the company reiterated to CarAdvice today that no official decision has been made.

Earlier this year, Mazda’s local marketing director Alastair Doak told CarAdvice: “We haven't got [to a decision] yet, we’ll give a commitment we’ll definitely make a decision by the middle of the year.”

The Mazda MX-30 is powered by a 35.5kWh battery pack that’s good for a claimed 107kW output to the front wheels and approximately 200km of driving range on the stricter WLTP testing standard.

Mazda claims the MX-30 can be charged to 80 per cent within roughly 40 minutes using DC rapid charging.

In March, Mazda UK announced pricing for its right-hand drive MX-30 at £30,495 (AU$56,700) driveaway when the car arrives in early 2021.
