The three body shapes include a five-door hatchback, five-door wagon and a four-door sedan. Ford says there will be no three-door hatch or two door convertible (Focus CC).
The Ford Focus will initially be built in Saarloius, Germany by year's end, whilst the previous generation Focus will continue being built in Spain until the second half next year. Ford says it's necessary to keep the old model running to meet market demand.
There is no official word as to when exactly the new Ford Focus will launch in Australia (Ford has been contacted and this article will update once we hear back), however given it will launch in Europe early 2011, we suspect Australians will get their hands on one by early-mid next year.
Having sold over 10 million vehicles badges as Focus in the last 11 years, Ford has had to expand its production line to meet demand. As such, apart from Germany the new Ford Focus will also be built in the USA (Michigan), Asia, Africa and South America.
One of the most notable safety features in the new Focus is the Low Speed Safety System which is similar to that of Volvo's city safe technology. It works by using a forward facing optical centre, the system will detect any potential collisions (at speeds of up to 30km/h) and if it calculates that the car is in imminent danger of hitting an object, it will hit the brakes and deactivate the accelerator. Essentially the idea is to stop rear-endings in traffic conditions when drivers are distracted.

110 kW/132 kW 1.6-litre Ford EcoBoost
Apart from the Focus ST, the most amount of power you will get out of a Focus is from the 1.6-litre Ford EcoBoost unit, available in Europe in either a 110kW or 132kW variant.
Ford says the engine is a completely new generation engine that focuses on high-efficiency and low-CO2 emissions. It makes use of a centrally-mounted high-pressure direct injection system, low-inertia turbocharging and twin independent variable cam timing (Ti-VCT) to produce its output.
Both versions deliver 240Nm of torque from 1,600 to 5,000 rpm but can hit 270Nm during a brief overboost function (under hard acceleration). Ford says the 132kW variant will accelerate from 0-100km/h in 7.9 seconds whilst using just 6.0 litres of fuel per 100 km. CO emissions rate at 139g/km.
77kW /92kW 1.6-litre Ford Duratec Ti-VCT
The standard 1.6-litre Duratec Ti-VCT engine has been given some minor upgrades to further enhance its torque output as well as reducing its fuel consumption.
70kW/85kW 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi
Moving into diesel, the 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel has been given a major overhaul thanks to changes to its fuel injection and combustion systems. It also gains an updated turbo unit for better performance and lower fuel usage. Both units deliver 270 Nm of torque with the 85kW variant capable of hitting 285 Nm during hard acceleration (overboost).
Both variants are capable of returning staggeringly low fuel economy figures of just 4.2 litres/100 km whilst emitting 109g of CO2 emissions per kilometre.
85kW/103kW/120kW 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi
Much like the 1.6-litre diesel Duratorq, the 2.0-litre unit gains the same updates and hence delivers better fuel economy. In six-speed manual form the 2.0-litre diesel is available in 103kW and 120kW forms whilst the six-speed dual-clutch automatic will cover all three variants.
