Toyota HiLux restarts production, plenty of stock coming for June EOFY deals

Deals on a new Toyota HiLux are likely to get even better in the coming weeks as the assembly line in Thailand restarted after a one-month break.

There's also large shipments waiting to dock or clear quarantine, and dealers are already overstocked due to the April sales slowdown.

Toyota Australia has confirmed both Thailand factories that produce the HiLux ute began ramping up production since the start of last week (May 11) after they were shut down on April 7 as a health precaution amid the coronavirus crisis.

A statement from Toyota Australia said: “The HiLux is produced (in) both the Samrong and Banpho plants in Thailand. These plants halted production from April 7 to May 9 and resumed full production from May 11. These plants are used exclusively to build HiLux and Fortuner variants and are currently operating as normal.”

Toyota Australia says there is unlikely to be any shortage of HiLux models in the coming weeks as the industry ramps up for June, the end of the financial year and customarily the biggest month of the year for ute sales.

“Currently, there are minimal impacts to our operations in Australia from these changes to production, and production delays have not greatly impacted our stock supply on the ground in June and July,” the statement from Toyota Australia continued.

“The main change we have noticed is that more vessels, in general, are being quarantined on arrival in Australia, so we are continuing to monitor any potential impacts to our parts and vehicle supply.”

As reported last week, Toyota dealers requested a delay in the arrival of the updated and slightly more powerful HiLux because they still have too many of the current model to clear.

Before the coronavirus crisis, the facelifted dealers were told to expect the updated Toyota HiLux to arrive in local showrooms in the third week of July.

The arrival date of the updated model is currently indefinite, however Drive believes it will be in local showrooms by the end of 2020.
