2020 Porsche 911 Targa 4 and Targa 4S price and specs

Stuttgart completes its 992 generation 911 lineup with a targa offering.

Porsche has unveiled its new 2021 911 Targa 4 and 911 Targa 4S models for the 992 platform, available for order now before they arrive in Australian showrooms later this year.

The Targa 4 will start from $275,800 plus on-road costs and the Targa 4S is $314,100 plus on-road costs.

The Targa variants are priced on par with the convertible 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet and 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet, which are $21,900 more than equivalent coupe variants.

Australian examples of the Porsche 911 Targa 4 and Targa 4S will come standard with LED headlights, lane change assist, surround view, auto-dimming mirrors, 14-way adjustable sports seats with heating and a memory package, electric folding side mirrors, digital radio with a Bose sound system and grey top tint on front windshields.

Both the Targa 4 and Targa 4S are powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged horizontally-opposed (or "flat") six-cylinder engine, and are only available with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels.

In Targa 4 guise, the engine produces 283kW and 450Nm, while the Targa 4S – which features a four-tract exhaust system design versus the Targa 4’s two-tract design – produces 331kW and 530Nm.

These figures are up on the previous generation’s outputs by 22kW for the Targa 4S and 11kW for the Targa 4.

Thanks to the extra power – along with a 'torque vectoring plus' package with electric rear differential as standard (a $3,120 option for the Targa 4) – the Targa 4S will cover the 0-100km/h sprint in 3.6 seconds, 0.6 seconds faster than the Targa 4’s time of 4.2 seconds.

Targa 4 models ride on 19-inch wheels up front with 20-inch alloy wheels in the rear. The sizes step up to 20-inch front and 21-inch rear alloy wheels on the Targa 4S.

The Porsche 911 Targa 4 has 330mm diameter diss on the front and rear; the Targa 4S has 350mm discs front and rear. Both cars use four-piston mono-bloc callipers, however the Targa 4S calipers are red paint and the Targa 4 brakes are black.

A ceramic composite brake upgrade can also be optioned for both cars.

The rear spoiler raises and lowers depending on the driving speed and mode, as is the case with other Porsche 911 models.

Both the Porsche 911 Targa 4 and Targa 4S come with active suspension management and traction management as standard, allowing automatic adjustment of the car’s damping, with two manually-programmable maps in Normal and Sport modes.

A ‘wet mode’ uses sensors to determine when the road surface is wet. Porsche says when the system detects a certain level of water on the road, "a signal in the cockpit provides a recommendation for the driver to manually switch to wet mode."

Inside, the Porsche 911 Targa 4 and Targa 4S come with a 10.9-inch touchscreen online navigation. A cluster of five buttons sits beneath the screen, allowing drivers to control other vehicle functions.

Buyers can choose from four two-tone interior colour options, including bordeaux red and crayon, black and slate grey, slate grey and Iceland green, and graphite blue and mojave beige.

The Porsche 911 Targa 4 and Targa 4S come equipped with adaptive cruise control.

Porsche’s ‘InnoDrive’ adaptive cruise control system features for the first time in a 911 model, however Australia will not receive the feature. The technology can scan upcoming roads, calculating when to accelerate and decelerate and recognising upcoming traffic situations without driver input.

Targa 4 and Targa 4S can be had in a range of colours, including solid options of black, white, guards red and racing yellow, and metallic options of carrara white, jet black, dolomite silver, gentian blue, night blue, agate grey, GT silver and aventurine green.

The Targa models’s roofs can be automatically opened and closed in 19 seconds. The brand also claims a revised wind deflector “significantly reduces draughts” in the car’s interior and is most effective at speeds between 50km/h and 145km/h.

The new Porsche 911 Targa 4 and Targa 4S are due in Australian showrooms in the third quarter of 2020.
