Toyota Yaris sold out, new more expensive model months away

The Toyota Yaris city hatch – one of Australia’s most popular and most affordable cars – has almost sold out and it will be months before its all-new replacement arrives.

Fewer than 40 Toyota Yaris hatchbacks remain across the national network of more than 200 dealers and once they’re gone there won’t be a model to replace it until August at the earliest.

Based on the monthly sales rate of the Toyota Yaris, these final 40 or so vehicles will be gone in the coming days.

The Toyota Yaris has been priced from $15,990 drive-away for a manual and $17,490 drive-away for an automatic for the better part of the past two years as the model neared the end of its extended 10-year lifecycle.

Drive has learned the all-new Toyota Yaris, with advanced safety features – including a centre airbag between the front seats – and a frugal three-cylinder engine, will go up in price significantly when it arrives.

Toyota Australia is yet to release details and pricing for the new Yaris model (pictured below).

However, Toyota dealers have been told to expect a drive-away price close to or in excess of $20,000 drive-away – an increase of 25 per cent compared to the current model.

The 2020 Toyota Yaris will be powered by a new 1.5-litre three-cylinder non-turbo engine matched to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) with a mechanical first gear for more natural acceleration. It is unclear if a manual transmission will be offered locally.

Although hybrid versions of the Toyota Yaris have been offered overseas previously, this is the first time petrol electric tech will be sold on this model in Australia.

The hybrid version will pair a unique variant of the 1.5-litre engine to a small lithium-ion battery pack and a small electric motor to eke out even more miserly fuel savings. Power outputs and fuel economy ratings are yet to be released.

The new Toyota Yaris is expected to be the first vehicle in the city-car segment sold in Australia with a centre airbag, to protect front-seat occupants from striking each other during a severe side impact crash.

The new generation Toyota Yaris will also form the basis of a new GR Yaris hot hatch and the Yaris Cross city SUV due next year.
