MG Cyberster concept: two-seat sports car previewed

The Chinese-owned MG brand has released sketches of what a future roadster could look like.

MG’s Chinese parent company SAIC has revealed images from its London-based design studio showing a racy, two-seater roadster, called the Cyberster.

The images were published on the SAIC Design Advanced London Facebook page – the latest international studio opened by SAIC – with little additional information about the model.

“Here’s a preview of something very exciting in the making, designed and developed by the UK & Shanghai Design team! Stay tuned for more…”, the post said.

SAIC Design Advanced London describes itself as “a creative hub for designers to explore new and innovative design proposals to enhance the SAIC Motor product portfolio brands of MG and ROEWE.”

The London design studio works in tandem with other studios in Birmingham and Shanghai to turn out designs for SAIC’s full portfolio which also includes Maxus (LDV, in Australia).

That means the Cyberster is more of a design study, rather than a pre-production model. But it shows what cogs are turning in the design studio, and gives a hint as to what might be in the pipeline for the storied British sportscar-turned-SUV manufacturer.

There’s no information around what might be under the bonnet or sheetmetal of the MG Cyberster concept, although the depiction of electricity around those massive wheels tells us it won’t be a conventional driveline.

MG has previously said a sports-car is something they are ‘working on’, which will help tap into the brand’s long and rich heritage.

MG has previously released images of an E-motion concept of GT proportions back in 2017, but the Cyberster’s roadster form pure sportscar: wide haunches, a long bonnet and 2-seat configuration.

MG currently sell the HS and ZS SUVs in Australia, along with the MG 3 small car. The MG Australia website is currently taking registrations of interest for their incoming ZS EV electric vehicle.
