Toyota GR Corolla poised for the USA. Now for Australia…

Toyota's next hot hatch may be one step closer to showroom reality, according to a cryptic social media post.

Toyota USA has hinted a GR version of its Corolla hatchback may be joining its lineup, however plans for other countries including Australia are yet to be announced.

In a recent Twitter post, Toyota USA said, “While GR Yaris isn’t hitting the states … perhaps it’s time the US got a hot hatch to call its own”. In the US, Toyota offers only the Yaris and Corolla as hatchback options.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">While GR Yaris isn&#39;t hitting the states…perhaps it&#39;s time the U.S. got a hot hatch to call its own. Join the Toyota GR family and never miss an update: <a href="https://t.co/qsPgFbY2TI">https://t.co/qsPgFbY2TI</a> <a href="https://t.co/CmD1ozxwVQ">pic.twitter.com/CmD1ozxwVQ</a></p>&mdash; Toyota USA (@Toyota) <a href="https://twitter.com/Toyota/status/1258369027803688960?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 7, 2020</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

While all signs had pointed to the GR Yaris for the region – including an image of the GR Yaris that is still being used on the ‘GR Hot Hatch’ page of Toyota USA’s website – the social media post suggests the US may instead get a high performance Corolla.

However, Toyota USA has warned that the post should not be taken as confirmation the GR Corolla will be built, telling publication Road & Track, the brand is “just exploring customer interest”.

GR stands for Gazoo Racing – the nameplate for Toyota’s new generation of performance vehicles. The GR badge is already worn by the Supra sports car and upcoming GR Yaris hot hatch.

If a GR Corolla was built, it's believed the model would pick up the 199kW/370Nm 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder used in the GR Yaris and utilise the same all-wheel drive layout.

Toyota USA’s Twitter post is the most recent in a series of clues suggesting the GR Corolla is close to being revealed.

Last month, Toyota Australia applied for trademarks of names including ‘GR Corolla’, however a representative told CarAdvice at the time that the application was not confirmation of the model.

"As part of our normal business practice we will register vehicle name trademarks along with Toyota in Japan to ensure that those names are protected for our use locally."

A GR Corolla was also reported as in the works earlier this year, with an expected debut in UK showrooms in 2023 but no confirmation for Australia.
