Kia working on new electric car flagship

The Korean brand is believed to be preparing a high performance electric car.

Kia is poised to introduce a high-performance electric car based on the Imagine concept debuted in 2019 (pictured above), according to a report out of the UK by AutoExpress magazine.

The technical details for Kia's flagship electric car are still under wraps for now, but the magazine reports it will be in European showrooms in 2021.

Kia Australia says it wants the model, however it says it is too early to say whether the high performance electric car will make it to local showrooms.

"Kia Motors Australia has made no secret of the fact that we desire an electric (vehicle) to join our local range and we continue to pursue that wish," a Kia Australia spokesperson told CarAdvice.

“As soon as we get the thumbs-up on supply from head office, we will take whatever electric models are available to us.”

While Kia is yet to confirm the details on its latest electric car, it is expected to be based on a new platform shared with sister brand Hyundai and come with an 800-volt electric system providing 480 kilometres of driving range, and a recharge time of less than 20 minutes when using a 350kW fast-charger.

While performance figures for the still-secret Kia electric car flagship remain a secret, the UK report says it will have formidable credentials.

“[Kia] will have in the new EV a high performance vehicle like an e-GT,” Kia representative Emilio Herrera told the AutoExpress.
