MG loans cars to health authorities for COVID-19

Chinese car company MG will provide a fleet of 10 of its ZS model SUVs to hospitals in the South Western Sydney Local Health District to assist in their efforts during the coronavirus pandemic.

The vehicles are intended to support the healthcare system with transport of essential medical equipment.

The South Western Sydney Local Health District – one of the largest in New South Wales – is home to roughly 966,450 Australians and includes Bankstown, Bowral, Camden, Campbelltown, Fairfield and Liverpool hospitals.

For reference, the greatest distance between any two of these hospitals – Bowral and Fairfield – is about 100 kilometres.

The MG cars have been offered for the entire duration of the COVID-19 pandemic, with an initial six-month period able to be extended pending the status of the virus.

New South Wales has been hit harder by coronavirus than any other Australian state, with 3044 confirmed cases and 44 deaths as this article was published.

This is more than double the confirmed cases of the second most infected state, Victoria (1454), and almost half of total cases nationwide (6794). Figures were current at the time of publishing.

MG's initiative follows others by the Australian car industry to support healthcare professionals and essential workers.

Other examples include Ford’s 2nd Car program that offers free rental cars from its fleet to healthcare workers, and the Australian rental car industry offering free or discount vehicles to essential workers.
